Thanks for sharing. this is interesting.

I like the idea of setting a target - we can call it  "the Myanmar Unicode Day"

But, 17.4.2011 is a bit close, it will not be feasible. we need time to educate and persuade.

The main thing is that all of us need to switch on the same day, otherwise it wont work.

I am thinking more like 31.12.2011 or 30.6.2012. so, at least we have a year + to work on :)

Just my view.

PS/

I was thinking about Myanmar Unicode Day concept for a while, immm great mean think alike :D

Hi Ko Tun, we have been doing a lot of grass root efforts in educating the users and received a lot of support, it was overwhelming and much more than we expected. The response we got was the sooner the better. Almost everyone wanted to change right away and it was us who ask to try one step at a time. Therefore to keep the momentum going and to address the desires of all those we met a closer date is much better.

I would also like everyone to right a small message this new year in Unicode on Facebook. That would be great. For one day in 2011 starting from 1st January 2011 at 00:00 Hours till 23:59. That would be fun.:)

I agree sooner the better. now will be the best :)

Personally, I've been ready since 5 years ago. but it is not just about you or me, but majority.

I am just trying to be realistic for all to participate and follow. If we were to decide a cut-off date, we have to make sure that everyone does follows, if not majority. As we all know, some may not be psychologically ready to change. Many are also waiting for others to go first.

We also need young leaders like SaturnGod and other influential bloggers to participate and lead. We also have to push our old guys on the other hand:D  we need at least 75% to follow suit then we will make it, otherwise there will be a major division; world war 3 will start from mm :)

I hope, once and for all, we can be "united" and do the right thing together. Personally, I don't mind waiting a few more months as long as it is worth the wait.  :)

Well, lets hear more from the rest.

cheers

Ko Tun, We are indeed working on all the points you have raised here and is indeed in touch with reality. We were working offline as that was much easier as things get skewed if we do it online. It is a perception issue here. I hope you would make it much easier the readers there that the reason for a need for yet another year has nothing to do with it's readiness. I believe you wish to wait to allow _some_ people time to warm up to it. No one would indeed not mind waiting a few more months if it is worth the wait. Therefore the question is - is it worth the wait?

We know what is right and therefore it is best at this time to take the lead and do what one feels is right than to go for plebiscite or a debate on an issue like a date.

Cheers,

Ravi

>We should not think about all thing will be changed in one day. It is impossible.

This date is a sort of deadline for all of us to cutover. We need to target a date. If people keep on using 2 different encodings,  it wont work. we will be divided.

>Is Java supported Myanmar Unicode?

Of course, Java supports Unicode. I've used Java for Myanmar word segmentation since 2005.

We have developed a search engine using Lucene and Java, and had no problem.

Are you referring to Java Swing ? Now is Web era and not many of us develop desktop apps using java Swing.

>Is Linux Desktops (KDE, GNome, XFCE) supported Myanmar Unicode?

Not many people I know use Linux as Desktop. Maybe server, yes.

>Is iOS supported Myanmar Unicode?

http://www.myanmaritpro.com/forum/topics/myanmar-unicode-available-...

It is not supported natively yet. Neither is Zawgyi

>Is domain names supported Myanmar Unicode?

Yes, they do. Whether we can see them correctly or not - is another issue.

>Who are the main supporters of Myanmar Unicode and sustainable?

This is "the" standard.

This is not about popularity and does not require supporters. This is "the right thing" to do.

Just that we have to educate people to understand the truth and rationale behind.

We all have to understand that Zawgyi works but is just a non-systematic temporary solution. It is suitable for neither processing nor long term. It is more like a tent without a foundation, which will collapse eventually. This is not about winning or losing. This is "the great migration" for the benefit of our language as well as that of ethic minorities.

cheers

>>doing a lot of grass root efforts in educating the users and received a lot of support, it was overwhelming and much more than we expected.

that's what  I had been talking about . Great work bros!

Ko Tun

Yeah, I should admit that I was biased to round up 36% as 'nearly 40%'.

Mathematically it is correct/acceptable to be rounded that way  :)

It is best to have a sufficient "grace period". I believe we need it sufficiently.
31-12-2011 as a migration deadline sounds good.
Smarter people will switch earlier anyway.

On the other hand, it is a usual thing in a country like Myanmar (unlike others),
to announce  a law today,
with effect from today, with NO grace period!

Everybody is ok with it too...

I agree April 2011 deadline is feasible upon a condition. well, like ko ravi says - sooner the better. isnt it :)

That is - if we could get young leaders like  Saturngod and Htoo Tayzar committed and make a difference. otherwise, we shall be humble and do more groundworks during the grace period.

thats my take

Cool. I think that condition is met. That is why I felt that date was 'right' one. It is also our new year day as well. I have a very positive vibe about all this. :)

If that is true, I agree with the date

Lets count down the days :)

PS/

another add-on condition: we must be respectful with people regardless of whether they agree with us or not. our campaign should be educational and persuasive in nature. That is how we should achieve our goal. i am confident we will prevail

၂၀၁၁ ခုနှစ်ကို ‘မြန်မာယူနီကုဒ်နှစ်’ အဖြစ် သတ်မှတ်ပြီး၊

bro, really good idea!

I want to help as much as I can.

Thanks

It is easy. The following are steps to help:

Ask friends on FB to use Unicode for one day this new year and also do that yourself.

Start Time: 1st January 2011 at 00:00

Till: 1st January 2011 at 23:59

That is for step one. After that those who enjoy using it should still continue that, and a lot of us will be continuing that and many people have chosen 2011 as the year they will start using Unicode. It may seem like a small step, but it is from there that the momentum can be build. Thanks.
